Verso Press2024

A small press with a big shelf presence

Series design and identity for an independent publisher of translated fiction.

Overview

Verso publishes twelve translated titles a year and wanted them to read as a collection without every cover looking the same.

The challenge

Freelance cover designers were producing beautiful individual books that had no relationship to each other on a shelf.

Approach

We set a series architecture — fixed spine treatment, flexible cover field — so each designer keeps their range while the collection stays recognizable end-on.

Outcome

Booksellers began shelving Verso as a face-out series, and the press reported its strongest backlist year to date.
